Although members of the Writers Guild of America had more pressing matters on their hands when they met tonight, the striking writers took time out to announce the winners of the 60th Annual Writers Guild Awards. The WGA is
this close to finalizing details on a new contract with the AMPTP companies, with membership meetings on both coasts resulting in a tentative agreement on a new contract.
Prior to tonight's meetings, the powers that be at the WGA West had already determined this year's Writers Guild Award winners would be announced sans the normal fanfare and festivities, citing the inappropriateness of a celebration during these hard times. Meanwhile the WGA East went ahead and held an informal reception at the Hudson Theatre to recognize the winners. First-time screenwriter/blogger/ex-stripper Diablo Cody added yet another trophy to her ever-growing collection for her original screenplay for
Juno. Ethan and Joel Coen also continued their winning ways. The filmmaking pair picked up the Best Adapted Screenplay award for adapting Cormac McCarthy's bestselling novel
No Country for Old Men. The WGA named Alex Gibney as the winner of the Best Documentary Screenplay for his work on the Oscar-nominated documentary
Taxi to the Dark Side.
