The First Big Surprise of the Night
Alan Arkin, looking quite debonaire, had the pleasure of reading off the Best Supporting Actress nominees (which included the glowing and very pregnant Cate Blanchett). And the winner is Tilda Swinton! Wow, that's a real shocker. Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) and Ruby Dee (American Gangster) were supposedly neck-and-neck as favorites, but Swinton won for playing a lawyer with fangs in Michael Clayton. Swinton compared the Oscar to her agent, saying they have the same shape head and buttocks. Swinton says she's giving it to him because without him she wouldn't have been in Hollywood. She said her director Tony Gilroy walks on water and then paid enormous compliments to George Clooney and made fun of the fact he liked to wear his Batman costume under his business suits at work.
